New formula of Royal Canin Hepatic vs. RC Hepatic LS 14

Royal Canin Hepatic—This presciption, vegetarian dry kibble for dogs has been a life saver for many of my dogs with liver disease; those with hepatic microvascular dysplasia, liver shunts, hepatitis, liver failure due to toxin ingestion as well as gall bladder disease and those with copper toxicity problems.

The “new” formula (now called just ” Hepatic”) which I am finally switching to seems very comparable to the “old” formula (Hepatic LS 14). You can’t really compare the amount of calories by “cup” because the measure has gone from 83 grams to 90 grams (the new food is denser so weighs more per cup). In terms of Kcal per kg, the Hepatic/new has 37.68 Kcal per kg (3768 cal) and the Hepatic LS 14/old has 39.08 Kcal per kg (3908 cal).

According to RC phone support, the Hepatic LS/old formula had a minimum of  13.5 grams of protein per 83 gr cup. For our smaller dogs, this equated to about 15 pieces of kibble for one gram of protein. The Hepatic/new formula now has 14.4 grams of protein per 90 gram cup, this is actually the “minimum” amount of protein. As fed, 100 grams of RCHepatic have 15.2 grams of protein.

Since the smallest amount of protein increases can make a big difference in symptom control in our tiniest and sickest dogs, this difference is important. The general recommendations on the bag are about 3.9grams of protein per kg;quite a bit higher than the 2 grams of protein per kg that’s been recommended for dogs with hepatic encephalopathy. The recommended amount for dogs with milder liver problems like hepatic microvascular dysplasia is 2-3 grams of protein per kg. Some dogs do require higher amounts of protein;however, for our very sickest dogs, there’s a fine balancing act between insufficient protein causing negative nitrogen balance and muscle wasting, and too much protein and symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy. IN general, six smaller meals per day will help take the stress off of the liver and so decrease the likelihood of symptoms.

My Hepatic LS 14/old formula bag lists Fiber at 4.6% max;on the Hepatic/new bag, fiber is 3.6%max.  For dogs with hepatic encephalopathy, fiber helps to increase fiber tolerance and decrease hepatic encephalopathy.  According to the RC rep, the Hepatic/new formula does have less fiber, both crude and dietary.
